Alexis Rocha is a Teaching Associate and Graduate student at San Jose University; she also moonlights as a SAT/ACT tutor for Compass Education and is a content strategist for The Center for Literary Arts.
Alexis is currently in her second year of teaching English 1A and is finishing up her Master’s degree in English. Her graduate studies include Black postmodern rhetorical theory, critical race theory, and Black literary studies. Her dream is to teach Black literature that is grounded in postmodern rhetorical studies. After her graduation in May 2021, Alexis plans to attend a PhD program in Fall 2022. She is in conversation with Howard University, Penn State, and UC Riverside.
Currently in production of four publications, Alexis works hard to put her scholarship out to the public. Alexis is writing a piece that analyzes the show #BlackAF and its adherence to tenets of critical race theory and counterstory. She has just submitted two book reviews and is working on a collaborative piece on professional development in teaching associate training.
When Alexis isn’t grading or studying she is at home spending time with her husband and their three year old son, Emerson. Together they love to hike, watch Avatar The Last Airbender, and dive into comic books. On the rare chance Alexis has any time to herself she reads. Whether it is comic books or nonfiction essays, Alexis loves to sit down with a good read and a craft beer (preferably from Stone Brewing). Her favorite authors include James Baldwin, Kiese Laymon, Akwaeke Emezi, and Toni Morrison.
